The night thickened, and wisps of cloud gathered. At times they covered the crescent moon. The sighing sea, and the low croak of a sleeping crow punctuated the silence. The two Norman soldiers pushed through the damp grass up Duncormac Hill. Above them sailed the leathery wings of bats, almost silent, marked by inky absences in the field of stars.
